Greg,

That's definitely doable.  There is a quilting pattern that is called a 
Crazy Quilt and it is just made of different size squares and rectangles 
that you place up against each other in random patterns and colors.  This 
could very easily be done with the rug hooking even if you were to go around 
your grid canvis and start with one color and one size square, say 4 by 4 
and then go to another color rectangle, say 4 by 8, kind of making it like a 
puzzle as you go.

Somewhere around here, and my husband has promissed to help me find it, I 
have a rug hook kit that is a simple American flag with "In God We Trust" 
written in black across the bottom.  When we find it, he will help me put 
the pattern on my netbook and I can share that with anyone off list.  It 
would be a great beginners pattern for anyone to try on their own.
