[Nfb-krafters-korner] FQ: What new craft would you like tolearn and how will you go about doing this?

Ninn,

Hand-made really does make the difference. This past year, I made my first
pair of socks (from sock yarn, not the big bulky yarn) and they were not
made from a pattern per-say. The actual pattern is called life-style socks
but there is no row guides or anything. I didn't like the cast-on method
described so I used a different one. The rest of the "pattern" just gives
you guide lines for trying on the sock and determining where to stop the toe
increases and start straight knitting of the foot and then where to start
the heel (with the yarn I used, I could bring the heel in about four or five
rows). My feet are more square at the toes so I changed the toe increase
also. I did actually use the instructions for the short-row heel (though I
wrote them out as a blind knitter). And last, for the leg it just tells you
to use whatever pattern you want. I just threw in some basic four-by-four
cables.

These are the best fitting socks I have ever owned. My feet are too short
for regular women's socks so the heel always goes up the leg. Also, the leg
on all of my socks, leave indentations. This includes socks that are not
tight on the leg at all. In addition, I have lymphedema in one foot so I
made the socks two different sizes.

My father has the same problem with socks leaving indentations (including
the diabetic socks) so he wants me to make a pair for him now.

Wow, I have a lot of knitting projects for this year. I better get my butt
busy.

Cindy S.
