I would love to learn how to make the Nantucket Lightship baskets.  Our
local art workshop had a class last year, but, alas, the same old, same old
issue, transportation made it impossible for me to attend.


Joyce is presently learning how to cane, which is something I have wanted to
learn also.  Oh, I just now got it!  Joyce Kane!  Hahahaha, I guess I am a
little slow on the uptake, huh?

Wow!  I almost missed a thread on basketry!  I'm very interested in
learning it.  I would like to start with reed and then to try other
materials, though I'm willing to start with something else if the
methods are the same and it's reasonable priced.  But I haven't been
able to find any blind or visually-impaired basket makers and/or
wicker workers to help me and most of the materials for learning are
too visual or don't explain enough for me to be able to do it on my
own.  I've written to several schools for the blind and none of them
have gotten back to me.  I'm beyond frustrated right now.

I know that there are various methods used in making baskets.  I keep
hearing about coiling in references to blind basket weavers.  Is this
the easiest for a beginner?  If there is anyone here who works with
reed, what gauge should I get, how much (I want enough to make at
least two or three small baskets) and is there any type of adaptations
that I need to be aware of as a totally blind weaver?  I got two kits

My friend and I made the first one, though it was mostly her, since
she needed to learn how to do it in order to teach me.  Perhaps, I
should get another kit once we finish this second one, so that I could
get the hang of it?  Is it a good idea for me to buy one of the tool
kits?  Finally, the shipping at the above site is a bit expensive.
I'm in New jersey.  Is there a site with better shipping options and
with the same high quality materials?  Any help would be sincerely
appreciated.  I'm also interested in making other wicker items such as
mats, toats and so on.
