Hi everyone,
I just posted my new blog article today. I was asked to write a short
article on how my vision loss changed my art and how I make art. this
article is what I sent to the journal editor to use. Thought you might like
it, too.

Such a busy day, today. I am still in my pjs and it is after lunch! Had to
write this article and get it off, and send them photos of my work; had to
write an artist bio and statement for my gallery show; had to communicate a
LOT with the director to be sure I have everything correct and have to write
the invitation out yet so I can get it to the printers tomorrow. And, still
have to write press releases today and tomorrow and get them off.
See where your crafty ways will get you - lots of WORK and lots more work -

Here is the link to the article:

I don't understand which way to put the yarn around or how to get it
through the loop.
I dreamed about this last night! *smile*
No answers yet though.

As you are holding the working yarn taught....the hook is going in the same
direction and you put it under the working arm and then as Cindy mentioned
you use your wrist to get a grabbing motion going...my words...smile and
this results in hooking the yarn and then pulling it through the slip knot
in kind of the same step.
HOpe this helps.

What should it look like when I get it? Do the stitches hang down
from the hook or stay on the hook? How many loops should be on the
hook at once?
Not sure if I get it sometimes or not.

great questions. The loops or chains should hang down and as you practice
they should be the same tension. There is always one loop on for chaining.
As you get into the different knots....there are different number of loops.

I may have it now but not sure. I'd think using smaller hooks it
would be hard to count the foundation chain stitches?

Lovette,
What you are making now is called a chain stitch. Generally every project
you make starts with a chain. Your pattern will tell you how many chain
stitches you need to make. It is abbreviated like this: Ch

Your pattern might say Ch 28 So you would do 28 of them. Usually the
number you chain determines the width of the project. One would have to
chain more stitches if making a baby blanket than if you made a scarf or
belt. If you were making an afghan you would have to chain even more. The
chain stitch is the foundation of most projects.

great questions. The loops or chains should hang down and as you practice
they should be the same tension. There is always one loop on for chaining.
As you get into the different knots....there are different number of loops.

Yes, to get this yarn to stay on your hook you have to get ahold of it and
turn your wrist so the hook slit is facing downwards. Pull the hook with
yarn attached through the look on the hook and quickly flip your wrist so
the hook rotates and the slit is back on top. You have completed one chain.

Sometimes, I have people try to just use their fingers to do a chain stitch
so they get the feel of that they need to be doing and how a chain should
"look". Then when they get the hang of a chain I switch them over to the
crochet hook.

Cindy Z.

HOpe this helps.

thank you may have it after all but my tension isn't good yet. I
assume that comes with practice like knitting.

thank you may have it after all but my tension isn't good yet. I
assume that comes with practice like knitting.

Just use your fingers by putting your fingers through the loop and grabbing
ahold of the WY. Pull the WY through the loop. Your fingers can grab the
WY easier than the hook while you learn to get the hang of it.

Hi Lovette,

I'm going to throw my 2 cents in here and add that there are different ways
to hold your hook that may help you. One is an overhand hold like you would
hold a knitting needle (don't remember if you nit" or like you would hold a
knife. The other way is to hold your hook like a pencil. This is the
method I prefer. I use both, but I do prefer the latter as I have more
control with the tension. I will say that most of my friends use the
overhand method, but I was taught the other and like it best.

I begin by placing the slip knot onto the hook, then I wrap the working yarn
around the pinky on my other hand, come up under the ring and middle finger
and then over the pointer. Double wrapping the pinky will add a little drag
on your working yarn and you won't have to clench your pinky to hang onto
the yarn. I then hold the bottom of the slip knot and tail, that is on the
hook , between the middle finger and thumb of this hand. This will create
tention on the working yarn between your pointer finger and the slip knot
on your hook. Using a sort of dip and scoop motion, with the hook facing
down, you go under the working yarn, come up on the far side, bring the hook
forward over the top of the yarn, angle it down to catch the yarn and then
in a sort of upward motion, pull it through the slip knot on your hook.
You now have one chain st completed. Try to relax and not pull the yarn too
tight. If the stitch on the hook is too tight, it will be hard to get the
hook through it, so relax! Repeat these steps to make your foundation
chain.

Continue to practice making chains. This will help you learn how to control
the working yarn and your tension. When you feel like your tension results
in uniform chain stitches you can move on to row two!. The first couple of
rows are always the hardest, but practice will get you there.

Good luck and if I can add any information, just ask!

Blessings,
Ninn

I don't understand which way to put the yarn around or how to get it
through the loop.
I dreamed about this last night! *smile*

I do hold the yarn a little different then described by Theresa

Tail of yarn comes in front of little finger going toward back of ring
finger then up and coming forward over back of pointer finger [if you are
left
handed]it is coming on the left side of your pointer finger toward the palm
side of your hand.and then that is the yarn that is going to your slip
kknot loop. I keep the tension on the yarn by holding my pointer up and
once
you get a couple of chain stitches going, I hold the chain between my thumb

and middle finger on my left hand. Whenever you get a row or that I
hold the work with my left thumb and middle finger and my pointer is held
upward to form a side ways

After the slip knot is on your hook....put your hook in your dominant

with my index finger. You have the hook parrellel to the floor. The hook
part should be facing the ceiling. After you get it in this
position...slightly turn the hook and go under the working yarn to grab it
with the hook.
Continue to slightly turn the hook as you pull the working yarn through the

slip stich and this forms a chain. You keep making chains until you ahve
the desired number.
HOpe this helps.

I recently learned how to make a Hula Hoop Rug. Is this something others
would like to learn how to do? It will make a rug similar to the ones that
my grandma used to make out of old rags. For this particular project you
use old t-shirts!

I also learned how to do a cool tie dye method on a cotton t-shirt. If
others are interested in this please let me know.

Thanks,
Cindy

I also use my thumb and forefinger to hold the last chain that I have made.
This keeps some tension on the loop making it easier to get the hook through
the loop.

After the slip knot is on your hook....put your hook in your dominant
hand. I use my right. Then take your left hand and I hold the tail of the
yarn
between my pinkie and the ring finger. I then hold the working yarn taught
with my index finger. You have the hook parrellel to the floor. The hook
part should be facing the ceiling. After you get it in this
position...slightly turn the hook and go under the working yarn to grab it
with the hook.
Continue to slightly turn the hook as you pull the working yarn through the

slip stich and this forms a chain. You keep making chains until you ahve
the desired number.
HOpe this helps.

Can you get a large one that the colors ar large and distinct? I chose to
take the Pen friend instead of a color identifier, since it could not tell
the difference between black and dark blue, my biggest problems. I wish the
NFB would let us buy the metal color tags, color by color. $30 for many
colors we do not need is illogical. They could sell them for maybe $.50 a
tag and maybe make out even or maybe more, then people could get just the
colors the wanted. I only have a few troubling colors, right now, but as I
get older, it might get worse. How do we submit an idea to them?

Terry,
Maybe you could try using Teflon skived tape and make your own Braille
labels that you need. You can attach them with a small safety pin. This
way you can make the tags you need!
