Subject: [Nfb-krafters-korner] Summer Fun with Kids

Hi Everyone,
I hope you are all enjoying this warm summer weather. I thought we
could talk about making ice cream this week. I will also talk about
some open ended painting activities.

It is open endedd projects that make us more successful when working
with kids. If the project is assumed to come out in a certain way we
might get ourselves in trouble. But if the children have open range
on their finished projects they are happier and that is what makes us happy.

Sidewalk Ice Cream

The original activity, many years ago, used any regular ice cream
recipe. This one is more successful because the ice cream is
finished before the kids get bored.

Materials

One large coffee can with lid
one one pound coffee can with lid

duct tape

salt and ice

Chocolate peanutbutter ice cream

1 pkg instant chocolate pudding mix
1 and 1/4 cups milk
about 1/2 cup peanutbutter

dirrections for ice cream

Mix pudding and milk. Add peanutbutter and mix to blend. Place the
mixture in the one pound coffee can. Place it in the larger can
filling the area around the mixture can with layers of salt and ice.

It is a good idea to tape the lids on the cans

Have children sit on the sidewalk and roll the can back and
forth. In no ime they will have wonderful ice cream.

Note: This is a great recipe to make with sugar free pudding. To
freeze in the house, just put it on plastic wrap on a cookie sheet
and freeze. Then cut into squares. It doesn't work well in popcycle
molds. Flexable ice cube trays might work well. But it is fantastic.

Marble painting

Materials

a lid from a gift box
Paper to fit inside
finger paints or poster paints

  A couple marbles

Dirrections

Place the paper in the box. Put a few globs of paint of different
colors in the box, making sure they don't touch.

Put a couple marbles in the box and have the children roll them
around. This makes interesting designs and should keep hands clean.
Afterall, it takes two hands to move the box.

String painting

Materials

fingerpaint paper
finger paints
string or yarn

Dirrections

Place a few globs of pain in the center of the paper. Fold the paper
and have children pull the string back and forth through the paint in
the folded paper.

Both of these activities can be used as wrapping paper or a
background for a photo or they can be the placemats for lunch.

Have fun with your kids.

Henrietta
~I wish you enough~
