It only has to do with the shape of the loom. If you knit something on a 
round loom but do not knit in the round, it will be straight. The same works 
on the oval looms. If you knit something in the round on an oval loom, it 
will still be round when it is removed. It only has to do with the size of 
the loom and making it comfortable enough to rest in the lap.
