Typically, you use your wingspan (hold your arms out from your body opposite
each other) and this length equals your height. So, you use your wingspan
for left to right and half of that length to go down the back.

Now having said that, there are all kinds of shawls now days and any size
goes. The smallest ones are called shawlettes and they basically just cover
your shoulders with enough to tie in front.
