[Nfb-krafters-korner] Question about knitting needles and flying

This is an interesting discussion. I've taken both knitting needles and my
slate and styllus and haven't had trouble. I believe the styllus is sharper
than knitting needles. I'm not sure about the circular needles versus
straight needles. I knit almost exclusively on circular needles so I don't
know what could be the difference. I do agree that taking a letter opener
or folding scissors would be better because they may frown on scissors. I
believe if you don’t' make a big deal about having needles and if they see
that the needles are attached to yarn they're going to realize that you're
knitting. If they ever do ask me, I just say I have knitting needles.
Another thing, I usually carry my knitting stuff in a carry-on bag but don't
say anything unless they ask me. I don't know if that helps but, it's what
I do.

Regards,

Denise

As for safety, I think the knitting needles are not sharp enough to be too
scarey. If they really wanted to prevent all danger, they would not permit
matches or lighters. With so many people so close together, both passengers
and crew are watchingl. If a person is doing something that looks
dangerous, it will be questioned quickly.
That is why they want to eliminate all possibilities for bombs, but less
concerned about scissors and knitting needles.

Okay, dumb question - why are the circular ones okay but the other ones
aren't? I'm using circular ones anyway, but geesh, if you really wanted to
do something rotten, I'd think it could be accompished either way.
Hmmmm..grin!

Take ONLY circular needles to be sure they don't get taken away from you!
And, I take a letter opener instead of scissor to be sure I don't lose my
scissor, too.
I knit everywhere I travel - the only place I had any trouble with knitting
needles was in Frankfort, GR. but I do not take any chances - I use
circulars because I know there will be no problems. Lynda

I've taken up knitting just in the last month (as mentioned in the last
post.) I'm about to leave again for another month on the road. I'll be
spending a lot of time in airplanes and airports and want to take my
knitting with me. Will TSA give me any hassle about the needles?
