When reading crochet directions they have "chain 1 or how many and then
turn" at the end of the row. It is terminology in a crochet pattern. So
just familiarizing everyone with the lingo of patterns.

Lovette,

The concept is this. whenever you are ready to start a new row you have to
bring the knitting up so that it is taller than the previous row. it is
like
taking a step up with yarn. You are also using the chain as your first
stitch in your new row. so if you are single crocheting the next row you
chain one to turn. It does not really matter if you turn your work and then
chain, or whether you chain then turn your work. it is just that you want
to
be consistent. Only one chain is needed. I usually chain and turn. The
single crochet is the shortest stitch in crochet so only one chain is
needed
to move above the previous row. If you are making taller stitches, the half
double crochet, the double crochet or triple crochet, these are taller
stitches, so you would need to make a different number of chains to turn.
But you need not worry about that now. chain one and turn. That's it.

Okay I think I am going into the right stitch but most of the time the rows
are shrinking.
Could it have to do with the chaining when starting a row?
How many again and I seem to hear comflicting things about when to chain
and
how many either before or after turning work?
Thanks.
Yes learning a lot!
