It is your choice, either way works.  Some folks crochet pieces  together 
with a slip stich   I Prefer to use a whip stitch which is  not laying them 
flat and doing it.  Remember to iron with steam the seams  to get them to lie 
flat.

different pieces. Do I just take a yarn needle and thread yarn  and
literally stitch them together? Do I lay the pieces side by side  and
insert the needle from the front into the back on piece A and  then
bring the needle from the back to the front on piece B and  repeat?

Or, is there a whole other way to do  this?
