Single crochet scarf options

There are a variety of scarf patterns you can make with only the knowledge
of the chain and single crochet stitches.

The first two patterns illustrate how you can make your scarf have stitches
go horizontally or vertically depending on what you like.

Pattern one.

Decide how wide you want your scarf to be. use your sample swatch to
determine how many chain stitches you should use in your base chain to get
the desired width of your scarf.

Make your beginning chain adding one more chain than needed so that you have
a chain to turn to make the first row of single crochet.

In a pattern the instructions might say ch16 to make your beginning chain.

Row1. single crochet in the second chain from your hook and in every chain
across the row, then chain one to turn for the next row. (in a pattern it
would say SC across, ch one to turn.)

Row2. Single crochet in each single crochet across row, chain one to turn.

in a pattern it would say SC across, ch one to turn.)

Row3. Repeat row 1 until scarf is desired length.

To end off, cut yarn and thread through last loop on hook to create a knot.

Weave in ends.

Pattern two.

Decide how long you want your scarf and use your swatch to determine how
many chains you will need to make the length you want for your scarf, say 60
inches. Make the number of chains needed then add an extra chain to turn to
begin the first row of single crochet. (in a pattern it would say, ch,
followed by a large number.)

Row1 in the second chain from the hook, single crochet into each chain
across the row, then chain one to turn. (in a pattern it would say, SC
across, ch1 to turn.)

Row2. single crochet in each single crochet across row, chain one to turn.
(the pattern would say sc in ea sc, ch1 to turn.)

Row3. repeat row one until scarf is desired width.

To end off, cut yarn and thread through last loop on hook to create a knot.

Weave in ends.

Pattern three is an example of how you can use chains between your single
crochet stitches to create patterns which are referred to as open-work.

Pattern three.

In this pattern the number of chains you have must be divisible by three,
such as you start with 15, 18 21 24 chains etc.

Row1. single crochet in the second chain from your hook and in each chain
across the row, then chain one to turn for the next row.(in a pattern it
would say sc in ea sc across , ch one to turn.)

Row2. single crochet in each single crochet across the row, then chain one
to turn. (in a pattern it would say, SC in ea SC across, ch1 to turn.)

rows3 and 4, , repeat row 2.

Row 5. single crochet in each of the first two single crochet stitches, then
chain one, skip the next single crochet stitch and then single crochet into
the next two single crochets. Repeat this pattern across the row, then chain
one to turn. (the

pattern would say: sc in ea of next 2sc, ch1 rep to end of row.

rows 6 and 7, repeat row 2.

Row8 repeat row 5.

Continue in this pattern until your scarf is the desired length.

Fringe can be added to any of these scarves to give them a fancier look.

Use your imagination to work with the chains and single crochets to create
different combinations to find a pattern that appeals to you.

Look online for beginner crochet patterns for other options.

Learning the double crochet stitch will greatly increase the number of
patterns and things you can make.

To make a double crochet:

To begin a row of double crochet it is necessary to chain two to turn to
begin a row so that the row will be tall enough to accommodate the taller
stitch.

With loop from chain on hook, yarn over hook, (two loops now on hook.)

place hook in first stitch from previous row, (three loops on hook)

yarn over hook again (four loops on hook now.)

back out of stitch, pulling last yarn over through the loop closest to the
hook end of the hook. , leaving other two loops still on the hook. (three
loops on hook now, two plus the new loop.)

yarn over hook. (four loops on hook once again.

back out pulling last yarn over through the two loops closest to the hook
end of the hook, leaving one loop on hook. (now two loops on hook, the first
loop and the new loop.)

yarn over hook, (now three loops on hook again.)

back out pulling yarn over through the two loops still on the hook. (one
loop now on hook.

you have completed a double crochet.
