[Nfb-krafters-korner] Walking sticks (and Diamond Willow)

That's one of the things I want to learn to carve. I just took my carving class yesterday and now have about 2-3 feet of diamond willow that I'm going to make into a coat rack. It's a fascinating wood as it has all these "diamonds" where branches have fallen off. So the first task in carving diamond willow is to go in and clean out all the "diamonds". They end up producing dips in the wood once they're cleaned out. Then you go in and sand the whole length of the staff, including the cleaned-out diamonds.
Diamonds can be anywhere from as small as a pea (in which case you just sand like crazy and get this little "eye" looking out, all the way to nearly as wide as your fist--some even longer than that! And the depths are different, too-some are barely an 8? of an inch deep, others go down at least half an inch. I've even seen a few that went down over an inch deep! These diamonds really add character to the stick, aside from any carving one might choose to add.

They are an on-going reference collection for her along with the (we won't count them) reference books and texts that she has accumulated over 30 plus years for her drawing and painting references. I gave her a book on dog breeds of the world for her reference library.

She is looking to do some bone carving and has gotten a few ideas for pendants that could be in either wood or bone, but I won't let her carve bone in the house. It produces fine splinter like shards that become airborne and since I have already been in the hospital twice in October with bloodclots in my lungs, that is a project she can sit on the front porch with.

I'm sure it takes lots of routing or sanding to make the wood smooth, especially with jewelry. Okay, I just thought I'd ask these questions. Oh, one more thing. Does your sister know of any place to take classes in this type of wood working? Have a great day.
