We will only be casting on 30 stitches to learn the technique.  The pattern
has an 11 row repeat.  So select a yarn and needles that work for you.  Just
use whatever you already have.  Then when you are ready to apply the
technique to a scarf, you can buy the yarn and the needle appropriate for
that yarn if you do not already own them.
