Annette,
Well, I'm glad to hear that. I would have hated to have to miss the class
because of how I knit. thanks.
Regards,
Denise

How you knit will not impact your ability to participate in the Short Row
Scarf class. I am not teaching how to create a stitch. Rather I am
introducing you to short row shaping. We will be using 1 pattern and
discussing how you can adjust it to get a different look.

Annette,
Thanks so much for all of your information. You sound like you're really
into knitting. Okay, I just got my knitting out and it appears that I knit
the English way. Will that be okay for your short row class? I don't have
any trouble holding the yarn and the needles. Also, I don't really like the
long tail cast on that much, either. I usually use the cable cast on but, I
can and do use the long tail cast on some of the time. I also find that I
have to use larger needles and change. That's interesting about how you do
the color changes. I'd like to learn that because I also don't like weaving
in the ends. Thanks again.
Regards,
Denise

Denise,
I rarely use multiple colors. I hate weaving in the ends as well as sewing
seams. I go for texture. However, with that said, I do use 2 colors when
using a technique called Entralac. Not sure if I've spelled that correctly.
This is a knitting technique of creating triangles and squares that are
connected as you knit. The end result is something that resembles a 2-color
woven fabric sort of like a basket weave. I also use multiple colors when
doing a technique called domino knitting and log cabin. I am still a
beginner at these 2 techniques so I have not done much with them.
I really want to give the self-striping yarn a try. I wanted to use it on
the baby blanket I am currently making, but could not find a yarn that met
the mom-to-be's color choices. So I am doing a 2 color entralac baby
blanket with a peachy-orange and antique white.

I agree with both Ramona and Joyce, simple is great. I myself really
haven't completed many projects because I have a habit of ripping things
out. Sometimes I bite off more than I can chew. So, it's a good thing to
remind myself, simple is sometimes better until I build up my skills. Do
any of you like to change colors or do you mostly use varigated or
self-striping yarns? Well, I just thought I'd chime in.
Regards,
Denise

I totally agree. [kis] keep it simple is the way to go when learning and
teaching beginners.

Karen, I know nothing about Turkish purl, but would be interested.
However,
most people are awkward with purling at first. If you really know the purl
stitch, Let me make a suggestion. Just choose something simple and make
yourself do it. For example: cast on anywhere from 20 to 30 stitches for a
scarf. Then knit five rows, purl one row. Repeat these six rows to make
the scarf as long as you want it. I recommend using worsted weight yarn
and size 7 or 9 needles while you are building speed and confidence. It is
mor comfortable to ppurl a whole row than to switch back and forth while
you are building your skill. End with the five knitted rows. Anything from
48 to
60
inches would be fine. You will probably need two 3 to 5_ounce skeins.
This scarf should not roll, but will give you some practice purling without
bogging down in it, hopefully. You can put fringe on the ends or not as
you choose. You can use a solid color or verigated yarn. This scarf will
be fairly heavy and warm, so you may not like it if you live in the South.
If this length seems overwhelming, just make a pot holder with the same
design, only stop when it is square, and you will want at least 30
stitches. You can find lots more fancy patterns which are great, but I like
simple for beginners to build comfort and enjoyment in knitting. If others
have better ideas, I am sure they will say so.
