[Nfb-krafters-korner] edges on a crochet project

Hi,

Why is it that when I make blankets or some other crocheted four-sided
project the middle section of each side seems to be more narrow than
the ends?If I fold the project in half, the ends always measure longer
and the middle section shorter. Why is this? And, how can I fix this?

I just started making a baby blanket and around row 2 I noticed that
the middle section seemed to dent into the project. So, I chained 46
and made 45 single crochets for the first two rows. By row 4 or 5 I
had to decrease to 41 single crochets and this seemed to have made
everything look more even. When I do an edge though, I'll have to
decrease on that one side, I suppose.

And speaking of edges...

I'd like to do some sort of scalloped edging. I've read that the shell
stitch is 2 double crochets, chain, 2 double crochet all inside one
stitch. But, how do you get to the next stitch? Do you have to skip
some stitches and do a few chain stitches in between? Does the shell
stitch work as a nice edging?

Is there such a thing as the scalloped stitch or is that the shell stitch?

I'd like to do something really cool and unique feeling, so I'm open
to trying any ideas you may have.

Thanks again,
LM
