[Nfb-krafters-korner] edges on a crochet project

My guess, is your stitches are not even. So the loop you pull up for one
example, the loop on one stitch might be the height of the crochet hook,
while another might be bigger. Or you might be missing or skipping a stich.
Maybe the one closest to the end of the row. That one is easy to miss as it
is kind of smushed together. But if you feel that smushed stitch it has the
tail tale two threads side by side that make it the top of the stitch. Also
in the morning you crochet differently then when you are tired in the
evening. It is something to be aware of. This also happens in knitting,
where being tired may cause you to elongate stitches or make them tight.
Kind of run your fingers and make the stitches all the same size.

You can make shell stitches all kinds of ways. To go from one shell to
another you can either slip stitch or single crochet. So skip first two
sstitches then in the next stitch do the two double crochets shain one then
two doulble crochets in one stich, skip two stitches and either slip stich
or single crochet in that stitch, skip two stitches do your shell in the
next stich. Now in the corners it is a little trickier. Add another chain
one and two double crochets in that corner. You want that corner to lay
flat. So don't be surprised if you have to add another double crochet here
or there. Just make it so it lays flat and looks even. So in the corner you
might have three or even four sets of two double crochets.

Other shell stitches are, what I call the wagon wheel where you have a
double then chain one double then chain one, say five times in the same
stitch. Then there is one that is one double crochet chain two then double
crochet chain two one double crochet, skip two stitches and single crochet.
Or just make all double crochets, say six, for example. You have to check
after three shells it is easier to see if they are laying flat. Then if
pucker, add another double crochet and see how that goes for three shells
more.

I am right here if you need help.

Subject: [Nfb-krafters-korner] edges on a crochet project

Hi,

Why is it that when I make blankets or some other crocheted four-sided
project the middle section of each side seems to be more narrow than the
ends?If I fold the project in half, the ends always measure longer and the
middle section shorter. Why is this? And, how can I fix this?

I just started making a baby blanket and around row 2 I noticed that the
middle section seemed to dent into the project. So, I chained 46 and made 45
single crochets for the first two rows. By row 4 or 5 I had to decrease to
41 single crochets and this seemed to have made everything look more even.
When I do an edge though, I'll have to decrease on that one side, I suppose.

And speaking of edges...

I'd like to do some sort of scalloped edging. I've read that the shell
stitch is 2 double crochets, chain, 2 double crochet all inside one stitch.
But, how do you get to the next stitch? Do you have to skip some stitches
and do a few chain stitches in between? Does the shell stitch work as a nice
edging?

Is there such a thing as the scalloped stitch or is that the shell stitch?

I'd like to do something really cool and unique feeling, so I'm open to
trying any ideas you may have.

Thanks again,
LM
