Lily,

Ok, a loop from your left-hand needle has been placed on the right-hand
needle so it's on both needles now. then you have wrapped the working yarn
from behind and in front of the right-hand needle. So you basically have two
loops on your right-hand needle. your needle is pointing away from you.  
It's good to have a little slack in the working yarn you've just yarned
over. 
Now take that right-hand needle and swing it around and dip it down so that
it is pointing to the back of the loop between the two needles, toward you
now. Place the point of the right-hand needle through that loop and pull it
gently up and off  the left needle so it is now on your right needle. 
This is a knit stitch.

If you are doing a knit cast-on you then move the stitch back onto the left
needle and knit another stitch until you have the correct number of stitches
on your left needle.
