The way I do it, it is like a provisional cast-on.

If you can knit socks on dpns, you can knit using magic loop. I personally
prefer using two circulars for but it is basically the same thing as magic
loop.

Don't feel bad about ripping your socks out, I like to do a figure eight
cast on for toe up socks and I usually end up ripping eight or more times
(because I am a perfectionist).

One thing that you might change is where your working yarn hangs if you
currently keep your working yarn hanging on the outside, try having the
working yarn hanging down through the middle, or vice versa.
