hi all interested,

making a pillow does sound like a nice and small project. there are latch hook kits out there that are specifically designed with a pillow in mind. how about I go look around and get a couple of descriptions of patterns to post for you all.

Jill has suggested a small pretty latch hook project that is not a pillow but can be hung on the wall as an accent in the kitchen or bedroom perhaps. this canvas is twelve inches square and uses approximately seven colors. it shows a red rose with green leaves and a stem on a crisp white background. there is a border of red and black framing the piece.

glad there is some interest. I will look at more patterns and hopefully you will continue to give me suggestions.

to answer questions, Deidre, yes the tool you describe sounds like a latch hook tool, and the little metal flap is how the craft gets its name. the flap helps one to attach small strands of yarn to a canvas of squares. 

the canvas is like that used for plastic canvas but is not plastic and has larger holes. it is like a cross stitch canvas but has much larger holes. the pieces of yarn are folded and slipped onto the strands of the canvas forming the squares. a blind person can do this craft if they have a pattern which can tell them exactly where to place each piece of yarn. the technique is easy once you get the hang of it. the true challenge is to keep your yarn organized so that your yarn colors are not mixed up.

how is it different than rug hooking is something i do not know, never having done that craft. but with latch hook you can make rugs to walk on, however they are more often used as wall hangings or pillows.
