I am right handed and I hold my crochet hook in my right hand with the thumb on the indented part or if there is no indentation....the part with the hook edge.
When I yarn over I use my left hand....I always use the hook to grab the yarn and I use just a small gesture. I have been making a blanket from the puff stitch and this involves nine loops on the hook at a time....I find my small gestures make the normal errors in this stitch a non-issue.
I have also found I preferer metal needles to plastic or wood...hope this helps.
