[Nfb-krafters-korner] making pictures with braille writer

Hi all,
Thanks for all the posts to this list regarding this topic.
I am fascinated by the idea of drawing using braille. It is amazing how, by
following the instructions, you can arrive at an actual tactile picture. It
is not only fun, but I like that one can share these with sighted people and
especially children. I have also used this method for making Christmas and
birthday cards and for scrap book pages. I would, for instance, use a post
card sized piece of construction paper and make some kind of frame all
around the card, using my Perkins. Then, I would glue a photo onto the
paper. My scrap book pages are definitely unique when I use braille in this
way and I love the fact that my pages are very tactile. Kids can also color
in drawings the same as they would with print pictures and of course blind
children can participate along with sighted peers if the drawings are
tactile?
I think it will be wonderful if teachers could do more arts and crafts with
their blind and visually impaired students. When I was at school we did some
crafts, of course, like mekrame, knitting, a bit of plastic canvas and
weaving with yarn on cards, but I believe there are so much more crafts that
blind children could enjoy making. I love paper crafts, so I am thinking of
things like origami, kirigami (folding and cutting paper), making cards,
using materials like clay, goop, puff paint, etc.
I would very much like to maybe collect some of the drawing instructions
some of you have shared so it can be a free resource for whoever would like
to make use of it.
If anyone has some ideas, please contact me at stephlin at iafrica.com or you
can share on the list.
I have a blog over at http://www.accessibleartsandcrafts.blogspot.com where
I have started to put up my text only origami instructions, so maybe I can
also put the drawing stuff there or link to other sites if they have braille
drawing instructions?
If anyone would like to make their own designs and share them, that would be
great.
Thanks.
Lindy

Oh cool! I'd be interested in knowing that pattern. '-D

Thanks a lot! I have started playing around with this new craft. I
designed an electric guitar picture for my husband since he is a guitarist.
I think it looks pretty good for a beginner!

Here's another Christmas tree; you can make it to whatever height you want:
1. 4 spaces, 3-4, 1-6
2. 3 spaces, 3-4, 2 spaces, 1-6
3. 2 spaces, 3-4, 4 spaces, 1-6
4. 1 spaces, 3-4, 6 spaces, 1-6
5: 2-3-4-6, 3-6 8 times, Z
6. 4 spaces, 2-3-4-6, Z
If you want to make it larger, add more spaces at the beginning of each
line, and add more lines following the pattern after line 4. Each line
starts one space earlier and has two more spaces between the 3-4 and 1-6.
Once you've made the tree as tall and wide as you want, continue with line 5

above, but include enough 3-6es so that the Z ends up 1 position past where
the 1-6 is on the line before it. You'll also need to adjust the trunk a bit

(though I'd need to play with it a bit to figure how best to accomplish
that.

Terrence, actually still here. '-)

Thanks, Jill! This will be so fun to make. Do they have any other pictures?

Thanks Cathy! I have been overwhelmed at the possibilities of what could be
drawn. I started the book and I did a sail boat, your tree you mentioned
and a school bus. And those wer in the first 14 pages or so. I found on
Perkin's website a pattern for the eifal tower. I am not ready for that one
yet! Such a fascinating thing I have found while searching for the macramé
book. I guess that is the life of a crafter... always splintering off onto
new and different projects!

hi all,

an interesting thread regarding the Marie Porter books and drawing with the
braille writer. there is only one thing I know how to make on the braille
writer I will share it here. it is a Xmas tree and I learned to make it
when I was very young. here is the pattern:

line 1: space five times, then make a for sign with dots 1,2,3,4,5,6, then
go to next line.
line 2: space 4 times then make 3 for signs and go to next line.
line 3: space 3 times then make 5 for signs and go to next line.
line 4: space 2 times then make 7 for signs and go to next line.
line 5: space once then make 9 for signs and go to next line.
line 6: repeat row 1.

<smile> Cathy
