The thing that hold hanks of yarn while you wind is called a swiffter. You
might think that you don't need one, that you could just wind hanks on your
own. Well, think again. Yes, you can, but it is exceedingly, very, quite,
difficult. I did it once and I will never do it again.

I forgot if you are winding hanks of yarn you need to purchase [it just
popped out of my mind the name of it], but it holds the hank of yarn and
turns  around while you wined it.  This is bigger then the winder.
