I have arranged at a yarn get together[knitting group] to have someone come
and talk and teach yarn spinning using a drop spindle. I have gone to a
unique place in Bridgeport [Blood Root Restaurant] and had a lesson with a
drop spindle and was encouraged their by the instructor to spin on her
spinning wheel.
Practice is the key to it all. I didn't have plans on putting my money
into a spinning wheel, but was interested in learning about spinning. There
is several groups in CT that are spinners that I know about, too.
Dixie, there is a fairly new group that meets in Milford, CT once a month
that I get notices as it began thru a knitting group that meets weekely in
my town.
So if you have any interest, dig around and look up spinning and weaving
guild in your state. The weavers guild in my state offers rentals and the
loan of different weaving looms too.

Last year Dixie told me to make sure when I was at a local fiber arts fair
to have someone show me how to spin. I did, and the part I did was simply
meld the fibers evenly together with my fingers. That was easy. As for the
entire set up, I can't say.
It's gorgeous here today and I've been out for the past few hours.
Now that I am back in, I am going to knit. That is my pleasure, that and
rug
hooking.
I listened to Ready Set Knit this morning and each time I listen to
the show, I want to go check out the spring yarns with cotton and silk and
rayon in them or alpaca and silk, as well as the usual yarns. I'm thinking
of calling down there and asking for a knowledgeable person to show me what
I want to see. I wonder if they could spare someone to do that and would
enjoy it. Web's is having a 39 anniversary sale starting this Monday, so if
you are a Web's fan, check them out on-line or drive into town.

Dixie, does a person need to have partial vision to spin! I have a friend
who is totally blind and tried to learn to spin and was disappointed
because
she couldn't grasp the instructions. She isn't sure if it is that she is
totally blind or that perhaps the instructor had a difficult time teaching
the spinning. So, if you or anyone knows of someone who is spinning and
totally blind, could you advise!
I'm not arguing with anyone; I'm just a messenger that I was instructed by
three teachers not to pull from the middle of the ske*. I'm not a
professional knitter like many of you, but I can tell you that I'm tolt
that
my finished products look the same as anyone else's. Smiles! One person was
very strict with her teaching and there couldn't be any mistakes in the
finished product! It was tough learning, believe me, but I learned a lot
about correcting mistakes, tearing back several rows and picking up the
stitches foring row as opposed to having to knit them on.
I'll try publing from the middle, but when I did that (and was corrected
for
it) my yarn did become very tangled and it took a while to untangle it!
Smiles! Maybe there are those who feel it's a matter of preference! Again,
I
don't know as much as most of you do, and probably never will, and I wasn't
saying anyone was incorrect, but rather that it's what I was taught by
fully
sighted individuals.
Hugs
