All you need to do is squeeze the yarn or sort of make a pancake out of the end of the yarn and slide it into the needle. Once in a while the yarn will get frayed. Just cut that bit off, after threading.

I know the tape thing works and is a good idea, but I usually don't have tape. I know that today, especially by younger people who tend to be germiphobes, this sound abhorrent; but I just spit on those stubborn yarn ends, roll the yarn between my hands to form a sort of point and thread it through the yarn needle. Then I cut that little end off and throw it away.

For difficult fuzzy or thick yarn, I take a small piece of clear tape and cover the end flat, then take and trim the edge to an angled point. This will then fit perfect into the large eyed needles and then just pull the tape off.
