[Nfb-krafters-korner] Update on my Website

Hi,

As already mentioned, using a simple font and a high contrast color
combination are great ideas. If you are going to use photo, clip-art, or
any other type of visual effect, be sure to add an Alt-Tag for each. This
is a description of the visual image that it is attached to. For those of
us using a screen reader, it solves that problem of hearing "graphic" when
we find it on a webpage.

Be sure to use a consistent layout for all pages that make up your website.
If you have links to other pages on your site, and you place them at the top
of your page, be sure to include a link at the top of the page that will
allow a screen reader or screen magnification user to Skip to Content. If
you are into serious webpage programing, you can visually hide this link so
that only screen reader users can find it, but then magnification users
cannot use it.

Don't clutter your page with a lot of information. Break up the info and
put each topic on a separate page. Arrange and organize your information on
a page by using multiple levels of headings. For example if you are going
to provide a resource page of free patterns, it might be organized with a
level 1 heading for your title that is centered at the top of your content
section of the page that says Free Yarn Craft Patterns. You can then use a
level 2 heading for each type of craft, i.e. knitting, crocheting, broom
stick lace, hairpin lace, etc. The name of each pattern under its
appropriate category would be placed at a level 3 heading, followed by a
brief description of the pattern and a link to the pattern on someone else's
site. Of course if you have a lot of patterns under each type of craft,
then you might consider a different page for each group of patterns.

Of course if doing some or all of this is beyond your current skill set,
then just stick with keeping it simple.

HTH,
Annette

When using headings think of it like an outline format in a document or
draft of a paper.

Hi Amanda,

I cannot speak from a visual standpoint but really like your site. I have
not used this but have you looked at having something like an Etsy store?
This may make purchasing of products from your site easier, but this is not
my area of expertise, but I know there was a discussion of taking payments a
couple months ago.

I am curious to learn what you find out about themes, site layout, and
pictures. I am currently building a blog about my crafting experiences and
while I want to market it to the blind, I want it to be visually appealing
and professional looking. I am particularly curious about pictures. Can they
be taken from a phone? How much photo editing has to be done? Can a almost
totally blind person take and post pictures independently? Also, how in
general can you make a site more "visually appealing."

Thanks

Hello all,

I have received emails from several people on these lists who were
interested in visiting the website I mentioned in my intro message but it
was down for over a day because the host was having server issues.
It is now back up and I wanted to let you all know since there was a lot of
interest.

As I said it's still very new and a work in progress, but feel free to check
it out, send me feedback or topic suggestions, watch out for the posting of
my handmade needlepoint items, and stay tuned for updates to the site. I
have a few really great ideas in mind for it that have not yet been
implemented.

You can visit the site by going to

www.craftyfrugalmom.com

or follow me on Twitter at

@craftyfrugalmom

Anyone who has experience with Wordpress driven sites, feel free to contact
me. I'm especially interested in discussing screen reader accessible themes
that are also pleasing to the sighted world. My current theme is ok, but not
all that visually appealing and I want to find a way to have the best of
both worlds. I do not want a site that screams blind. I want something with
character.

Well, gotta run now because I'm off to a day at a local amusement park with
my family, but I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!
