Hi Valerie,
That problem with the double pointed knitting is called lattering. I had
that problem when I first tried metal double pointed needles. I switched to
bamboo ones and it helpped loosen my grip on the needles. When I go from
one needle to the next, the first stitch I knit, I take the working yarn and
tug it slightly towards the needle I just finished. I also position the
needle I'm currently knitting on so it is positioned with both ends above
the previous needle and next needle points, so to speak. This puts the
left-hand working needle above the needles to the right and left. This also
reduces the pull on your needle to help keep your knitting from forming
latters.
The best remmody is practise. Before I switched to the bamboo needles I had
such a hard time with the lattering and with the heavier metal needles
always slipping right out of my hands and out of my stitches, that I had
decided not to keep trying this technique. So, I set it aside until someone
suggested the bamboo needles and the rest is history. I have bamboo needles
from size 1 to 15.
