Hi,
if jaws is not installed, get the jaws DVD and install it.
It is self voicing when you pop the DVD in.
Without a DVD you need to go online and download the latest jaws or if you 
are not authorized to update, download the demo version of jaws 145. For 
this, you need sighted assistance.

Once jaws is installed, you can go to the desktop, press j for jaws and 
press enter; this can be done without a sighted person.

Windows 8 is tougher; have windows 7 now and plan to keep it. I wish nfb 
would write some resolutions about easier nonvisual access for windows; 
something needs to be done about it.

JAWS has not been installed on this new computer.    So need  to get that

Like Dixie said, you can use windows key D to get to  the desktop (windows
key being the second key
from the left on the bottom  row, then when you are on the desktop press
the letter j and enter key
and  jaws should come up, if it is the only program starting with j.
Sometimes  if windows key D doesn't get you any joy, try using windows key
M.
if that  also doesn't work try pressing alt control J which is the hotkey
for loading  jaws.
