I am telling her about things that work for me, so what you are saying can not be true for all hearing problems.  
Whether I can hear someone, depends on their clerity, volume and distance from me.

When you have a hearing loss, turning up the volume does not help.  Most people have a loss in a specific sound frequency.  This is most often the higher pitches.  When you turn up the volume you are increasing the sound of all of the frequencies that make up that sound.  The increased volume of the frequencies that the person can hear drowns out the ones the person cannot hear.  Digital hearing aids amplify the frequency that a person has difficulty hearing and leaves the other alone so to speak.

If you can use Jaws, then you should be able to use a speaker phone.  I think a phone is clearer than Jaws.  
Have a friend call you and put the phone on high volume and test it out.
