Mobility Mitten Instructions

Maryland School for the Blind

Begin with four size (5,6,7) needles. You will need approximately 2 oz of
wool or other yarn, and a clip to hold stitches. Scraps are easily
adaptable to this project, making stripes of several colors. Gauge can be
adjusted by using different sized needles & weight for yarn.

Cast on (30, 36, 42) stitches

Knit 1, pearl 1- in a rib stitch for desired length of cuff (approx 5-6")

Switch to stocking stitch

Increase 1 stitch every (5, 6, 7) stitches on the 3rd, 6th & 9th row. Total
increase equals (18, 24, 30) stitches.

At 1" from the cuff put 8 stitches on the holder to form an opening for the
crook.

Cut yarn leaving approx 6" length hanging for sewing later

Continue by casting on 8 stitches to replace those on the holder

Continue knitting until you get back to the cast on stitches. These 8 cast
on stitches are knit in a rib stitch like the cuff for approx 8 rows.

At the end of the 8 rows of rib stitch opening, continue in stocking knit
stitch for 4 to 5" (depending on size) (including increase)

Begin decreasing by decreasing 1 stitch every (5, 6, 7) stitches every 3
rows ( as with the increase above) until 24 stitches remain.

Knit two stitches together around until 14 stitches remain.

Knit 1, purl 1 for 2" to form an opening for the cane at the end of the
mitten.

Bind off

To finish the crook opening in the palm of the mitten, pick up the 8
stitches from the holder onto the needle.

Use the stocking knit stitch for 6 rows.

Cast off and sew up the opening on the sides.

FOR EXTRA FANCY MITTEN:

A pocket may be formed on the top of the mitten as follows:

Hold 20 stitches on a holder

Pick them back up on the next round

Pick up 20 stitches to knit the back of the pocket

Stitch together to form the pocket

Add a button or Velcro closing
