[Nfb-krafters-korner] Crafty gifts

I am thinking that my machine is a silver reed, but my memory may not be very good. I also think it is no longer manufactured. The man I bought it from did a search of stores to find one that had this machine new. There are some used ones, but you would need to be very careful. And there may be some still manufactured overseas, but not a lot. Becky Frankeburger steered me to this man. Since my daughter lives in Seattle where his store is, I was able to go see what he has and take some lessons from him. It really helps to have somebody like this to get started.

I tried the machine Joanns carries first, and was not happy with it nor the support I could get from the store.

Still, I have been thoroughly enjoying this machine. It really takes a lot of consentration to make patterns, because you have to count across every pattern row. Stripes are simple, because you can just attach new yarn at the edge. You can get another piece to do ribbing, but I didn't think that was worth the money or the space. I can do the ribbing by hand; put it on the machine; knit the entire front or back of the sweater until the neck shaping, then remove it from the machine and finish it by hand. The same for sleeves. I can increase to widen the sleeve until the underarm. Then I can remove the sleeve or shape it by taking off stitches as needed. You have to do some trim by hand or sew something to it with a seam in order to avoid the rolling of the stockinette stitch. I don't do a lot of textured patterns, but with patience, you can. I use a lot of verigated yarn for place mats and chair covers, and I make a lot of stripes. I keep figuring out how to do more things. There are still enough people around who teach machine knitting that there are seminars every year or so in the West, so I feel certain they also occur other places. I haven't had the time or money to go, but they sound interesting. Becky keeps me informed. You would have to find some contacts in your area. Are you in Britain?

Hope this is helpful. If you want to write offlist, my email is walhoframona at gmail.com.

Hi Ramona,
Machine knitting is moving to the top of my’do it’ list.
> Could you tell me the manufacturer name & model? I like the idea of the machine doing the repeating pattern which for me becomes boring. Could you add any pros and cons of machine knitting? I have light perception so do all my crafts by touch. Some machines are probably better than others for my use. How are you managing?
Thanks for your thoughts,
Catherine J
