Portia and Cathy, thanks very much for the info about knitting cotton  I
will check Amazon and also the links suggested.  I had a look at a local
shop today and they did not stock the 8 ply either.

Krafters korner has a resource page listing sites that members have found
helpful for various crafts. One section is for crocheting and knitting and
lists a number of sites from which to purchase yarn. this might be a place
to start. You will need to go to each site to see which of them ship
internationally.

My favorite site is

which is not on our resource page, but I don't remember if they ship
internationally.
