One site I really love for both choosing yarn and finding free patterns is 
LionBrand yarn

click on the link that says patterns and then choose between crochet, knit
or loom knit patterns. These patterns are formatted for embossing and have
good written instructions.

Play around over there and I am sure you will enjoy it.

Another site I really like is 
Ravelry. It is free to sign up and then you can search and choose from
thousands of patterns by all kinds of criteria.  This site is a bit tricky
to get around in because there are so many search options, but if you play
around with it I am sure you will find  great patterns there.
