Barb,

That is so great that you have a date.  It is definitely a process getting used to noises and learning to distinguish them.  I can't wait to hear about your experiences with hearing things for the first time.

A few months after my friend got her cochlear implant she was at my house.  We were playing different chords on my electronic auto-harp and trying to explain how mood is expressed by music.  She was like a kid in a candy shop.  Later on in the day she heard a noise and asked what it was.  It turned out that it was my dad whistling.  She did not want him to stop whistling because whistling was something her father did and this was the first time in her life she could hear it.  My friend was in her 60's when she got her implant.

We have a date for surgery!!!
I will have the cochlear implant surgery on Oct. 30th, they will shave my head behind the right ear, drill a hole attach the electrodes and place the magnet, glue me shut and send me home if all goes well. With half my head shaved and a bandage wrapped all around my head, I won’t need a halloween costume, I’ll already look like a zombie! LOL
3-4 weeks later I will have the processor attached and turned on, I should be able to hear sounds but most likely will not understand words for a while. They say it can take up to a year to train your brain, so this will be a long process.
