I check my sent items, too, if I am wondering if something went through.  Usually if it did not go through, I will get an error message.
I use gmail at home.  When starting, I had no idea that I would not get my own e-mails, like in outlook!

Hello,

To be certain that I have sent a message I simply check my sent folder. If a message bounces and isn't received then you will get a message telling you this is the case.

But as previously mentioned there is a link on our homepage to go to the archived messages.
