Which method is easiest to do?
I was trying to do it by slip stitch and chaining up and going round in a
circle. I want to go around in a circle though.

If you are  working top of hat down you need to put a stitch marker between
the first & second round.  

Now my next question is are you continually going in a circle?  Or are you
using a slip stitch to the first stitch and then chaining  to go up  and
start going around again????  This part is very important which way you are
doing it.

I need the answer above before I can advise on continuing.

I really think you need to find a hat pattern for an adult so you know how
many increasing and which way to do this.

The tough thing is if you just wing it you should really take notes with
information of rounds or rows, increases or decreases so if you like how it
comes out, you have reference to make another hat.

I got the starting ring down but once I go round by round, I am stuck.
