My Grandfather used to brush them with either shellac or varnish to preserve 
themi. I found one in the basement of his house when I was cleaning it out, 
and I found out that the gourd was at least 50 years old (if not older.)
The gourd looked like new.

When they are dried, they won't spoil.  While they are drying they can
mould,and you scrape it off in the spring.  If they rot inside, you throw
them away.  You can spray them with bleech to keep down the mould.

How do you keep them from going bad, after all that work of carving them and
decorating them?  They do grow, so are a plant of some kind!

Yes. Gourds come in everything from white, cream, tan, yellow, oranges, and
any combination. The colors become less brillian once they dry usually from
my experience, but it is still there. They come in every texture, size,
shape, and you never know what you'll get exactly since each one is unique
in some kind of way.

I've only seen a few gord plants, but it seemed that they vined everywhere.

A friend of mine would plant small gords and morning glory on the same
fence.  They looked nice vining together.

Do you know if they come in different colors?

I can't wait to see what you do with them.

I am going to see the gord lady (that's what she calls herself) tomorrow to
pick up some plants.  She said she started some that would grow large and
plants that would produce different shapes of gords.  So I am excited!
