Hello, All,
I wish to add to what Joyce said by suggesting that a knitter who has 
never made a sweater of any kind begin with a pullover with a dolman 
sleeve. The sleeve is made by casting on an arm-length of new stitches 
at either side of the front and back when the sweater has reached the 
place where the armholes should go. Then the knitting continues 
straight until the top of the sleeve and the shoulders. If you do not 
like to wear pullovers, make your sweater out of cotton, acrylic or a 
blended yarn and put only short sleeves on it to make a nice top. Next 
will come the cardigan, which is a good bit more finicky.
