Hello, Ramona,
You have mentioned one of the big problems with knitting, the 
buttonholes which tend to stretch out. I usually use a buttonhole 
stitch around them as I would with a garment made of woven cloth. Then 
there was the time when my aunt realized that she had forgotten the 
buttonholes on a baby's sweater she was knitting. My mother just said: 
"Use a pencil." It worked.
