Yes, I am one of the sewing teachers and I am the quilter.  I knit, crochet,
do pony bead classes, do some loom knitting, make baskets and candles,
soaps, etc.  My newest attempt is to learn how to embroider on my new
embroidery machine.

I will be teaching a sewing table topper quilt class in October and you can
hand sew this or machine sew it.

There is several classes for beginners coming up.

So take a look at our class page.

In telephone classes we encourage you to work on the project during each
class.  Our teachers are blind/visually impaired and put into words what
their hands are doing.  If any student is having any trouble with following
along all you need to do is email the teacher and she can answer your
questions or set up a time to give you some one on one.  All our teachers
are anxious for you to learn.

We will be having some safety pin beading classes for October, November and
December.  I don't have dates as of yet.  What is planned for that is a
lighted Christmas tree and I think a light house.  Yes, this is made out of
safety pins & beads.  Our teachers for this make up the kits and Braille
labels for the beads and package it up.

Some of the teachers make up kits and do the labeling and others advise you
where to find the supplies.

For the Fall table Topper [sew & Quilt] I have kits that can be ordered and
the quilt pieces are cut into the shapes they need to be cut into][I have an
Accuquilt which has the shaped dies and I cut it out by feeding the die,
fabric, & guard plate on top and cranking a handle.]

So there is a lot of information that we share and tools we have found that
helps a blind person out.

Yes, I Have no light perception at all and I have done and taught the above
crafts I said I do.  So whether you take an email class or take a phone
class, the teachers are there for you to learn.  All our classes are taught
from a blind point of view. [No references to Look at the diagram or watch
my hands & fingers]

I joined last night around midnight, and I have been getting a good feel of
this group and love it.

I talked to my mom about joining classes, yeah, the $20 is a bit high for me
since I'm on a budget. She told me that her sister, herself and mom all
crocheted, knitted, and sewed when they were younger. She said also it was
easier for them because they have sight. How can you teach a nearly blind
person how to nit, crochet and use a sewing machine safely? How can you
teach a nearly blind person this over the phone? How many days a week are
the classes? If I miss the scheduled time can I make it up? Can I pick the
time or is it already set? How many students will be in the group? Are there
any accessible crafting books for the blind? How do you read and understand
them? Do you use the fat needles to craft with? Is there any accessible
sewing machines for the blind? Can you use a sewing machine if you don't
know how to sew?

Naima, we are glad to have you with us.  You can pay your 20 dollars dues
through paypal or you can send a check to our Treasurer who is Cindy Zimmer.
Our Website is pretty easy, but check it out, and see if you have any
trouble. There is no other charge, and if the 20 dollars is not practical
for you, we can work something out.   

Our President is Joyce Kane.  It is hard to tell how long you have been
silently following this list.  But if you have questions, don't be shy.  I
will try to remember to dig up Cindy's email if you want to contact her
offlist. I should have it in my head, but it is not there.

Hi all,

I wanted to share my good news.  I told a few of you on the chat Monday
Night, but wanted to let others know.  I have accepted a position with the
Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services as a vision rehabilitation
therapist, also known as a rehab teacher.  I start September 16.  I hope to
share our wonderful group with the individuals I encounter with my job.  I
hope to be active in the group, but if I am quiet, I am busy, not dead!LOL!
Prayers appreciated for this transition from stay at home mommy to working
