It does all kinds of things. You need wireless internet access. You can set  a timer, set an alarm, ask the date and time, turn on a lot of skills to play games, get recipes, and much more. You can ask Alexa how to spell a word, do math problems, ask about weights and measures, get the weather forecast, get news flashes, Etc. This one is a small one, and very portable. It's totally voice activated, but you need a smart phone or a computer to set it up. You can ask Alexa to add something to your shopping list, and you can also set up your calendar through Google. You can also look things up on Wikipedia, listen to music and link it to your audible account.
