Hi Sharon, yes, there are patterns for such tote bags.
The craft is commonly called Plarn, there have been classes here in the past 
on this craft. Perhaps another one will come up in the future.

Hi,

Does anyone know of a pattern or books of patterns for crocheting grocery 
bags to make tote bags and other things that are easy to understand, or know 
basically how to decide when and how to let the material start curling up? 
That's one thing I'd like to try once I get some projects out of the way.
