Hi, Henry.
You can put a lifeline in, no matter what the shape of your piece is.
Just make sure you have the amount of ribbon for the length of your
piece, plus some extra for threading. I use the lifeline as much as
possible, changing them whenever I need to. For example, when I do
socks, I put one in after the toes, then halfway up the foot. Then I
take the one from the toes out and put it where the live stitches are
when I finish the sole and want to turn the heel. The stitches just
sit on the lifeline the way they would sit on the cable of your
needle, so you can pull the lifeline out when you're done.

I use the ribbon because I can tell it apart from the yarn, and
because it slips out easily when the lifeline needs to be removed.

HTH,
Dani
