Hi, Catherine.
Here are instructions for the three needle bind off. I got these from
a friend on another crafting list.

"If you hate sewing, you might want to try the three needle bind off
for shoulders. Unlike the Kitchner, the three needle bind off makes a
seam, which gives the shoulder more support and keeps it from
stretching.

To do the three needle bind off...
Hold the two needles with the front and back stitches parallel to each
other with the right sides together. The wrong sides will be on the
outside. In other words, you want the public sides facing each other.
Then, knit pairs of stitches, using one stitch from the front needle
and one from the back needle.
Knit the first pair of stitches, one from each needle, together. Do
the same with the second pair of stitches. Then pass the first stitch
over the second in the usual way for a bind off. Continue in this way
until all of the stitches have been bound off.

Hint: Instead of holding two needles in one hand for the three needle
bind off, you can turn it into a two needle bind off. That way you
will only have one needle in your left
hand. In the case of working shoulders for a sweater, move the
stitches from the front and back shoulders to one needle by
alternating one from the back then one from the front. Then this is a
breeze. You do it the same way you would do a regular bind off except
that you k2 tog, 1 stitch from the front with 1 from the back instead
of just knitting 1. This way you don't take a chance of dropping a
stitch like you do if you have two needles in your left hand and are
knitting one from the front needle
together with one from the back needle."

I haven't tried this myself, but it sounds doable. I'd put lifelines
in to both pieces, transfer both sets of stitches to one needle, then
go from there. The lifelines are just in case something happens to
interrupt the flow of work and I mess up and need to take stuff out
and start the bind off over.

HTH,
Dani
