[Nfb-krafters-korner] Want To Know Wednesday

That crocheted coral reef project was really fun! It was kind of cool
saying that my work was displayed in the Smithsonian. Grin.

I donate my dish cloths that I make to our church God's Glory Gallery. This
is an annual event in which donated handmade items are sold and the funds
are used for our Vacation Bible School.

I crocheted well over 100 Granny squares for my friend's daughter's Bat
Mitzvah project. She assembled the squares into blankets and donated them
to a organization that helps refugees.

I also have started a weekly Prayer Shawl group. We knit prayer shawls,
baby blankets, chemo caps, etcetera. We donate them where there is a need.

Finally I have knit items that I donated to www.GuideDogUsersInc.org for
their auction.

Nella, Thanks for the Wednesday Questions.

I've always found ways to volunteer. When my daughter was in elementary
school I ran the after school programs sponsored by the PTA, and taught many
of the Hands-On Science after school classes. I spent countless hours
volunteering with my daughter's Girl Scout Troops. One year I taught them
to crochet and we made stacks and stacks of Granny Squares. When we sewed
the squares together, we ended up with 2 adult sized blankets, 2 child sized
and one baby blanket. We donated all of them to a local homeless shelter.
A few years ago at work I coordinated an effort to make scarves, shawls and
lap blankets for the near-by nursing home. We made a total of 96 items and
gave them to the residents as gifts during the annual holiday luncheon we
host for them. I am starting to work on another charity knit/crochet
holiday project at work. Depending on what the crafters want to do, we will
either do the same items again for the seniors, or we can do a mitten tree
for one of the local elementary schools we have adopted.

A few years ago Dixie and I crocheted pieces that were displayed in the
Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. It was called the "Crocheted Coral
Reef". The purpose was to educate on how pollution is killing the Coral
Reef. I also coordinated contributions for this project from crocheters at
work.

I can't believe that Wednesday is already here. As you know Wednesday means
I get to exercise my brain. So, here are my thoughts for the day.

I thought we might get a little head start with Monday night's chat topic.
Next Monday Darian Smith from the community service group is going to tell
us about the division and Its mission. He's also going to talk about ways
we can serve in our communities.

Do you volunteer in your community?

If so how?

How can we use our love of crafting to help others?

I feel certain that this is going to be a wonderful discussion. I'm looking
forward to reading my email today.

Nella
