Hi all,

Debbie asked me for clarification on the chain and single crochet and I
thought that others might find this helpful so I am also posting this to the
list.

Hi Debbie,

I am sorry you are having difficulty with your chains especially since the
chain in this project is so darned long!

Ok, the trick with making chains of the same size is the tension you are
putting on your working yarn as well as keeping the loop on your hook from
tightening or loosening as you make the next chain. you don't want to grip
the working yarn so tight that your stitches are tiny and yet you don't want
to pull the loop out inadvertently as you prepare to make the next chain.

Perhaps to get accustomed to making the chain you can try it this way.

Move your slipknot down to where the shaft of the hook begins, just past the
skinny throat. Place a finger of your right hand on the loop to keep it from
either tightening or loosening. With your left hand, yarnover by bringing
the yarn behind and up the left side of the hook and lay it over the throat
of the hook. .

Turn the hook slightly to the left side and down as you pull it through the
slipknot. the new loop will be formed. Slide this new loop down to the
beginning of the shaft, and hold it there with a finger as you yarnover with
your left hand and once again pull the hook through.

It is important to ensure that you are not twisting your chain as you make
it. you want the loop closest to you and the spine of the chain away from
you.

As for the single crochet instructions:

single crochet (SC)

insert hook through second chain from hook.

With one loop on hook:

Place hook in the next stitch to be worked. Two loops on hook.

Yarn over hook, three loops on hook.

turn hook and dip down as you go through the loop closest to the yarn over.
two loops on hook.

Yarn over hook, three loops on hook.

turn hook and dip down as you go through the two loops next to the yarn
over. one loop on hook and stitch completed.

Skip 1 chain and single crochet into the second chain and all chains across
including the slipknot.

To begin second row chain one crochet into the first stitch in the previous
row, and single crochet across row, but do not crochet into the turning
chain.

Note: it would be helpful to you to place a stitch marker after you have
crocheted across the first row, turned your worked and then chained1,.
Single crochet across the second row, turn and chain 1, then place another
stitch marker. After that, you can take out a marker each time you get to it
and place it in the next chain you make.
