Jan, what Cindy says is a good way.  There are other techniques, depending
on your student's skills and preferences.  

Many sewing machines have a sewing guide that can be screwed on the top of
the machine table.  That is a good guide.  If she does not have one, a tack
can be used, tape is sometimes okay, and I have seen a quilting guide that
can work.  Joyce has done a bunch of quilting.  I have done a lot of general
sewing if you want to contactg one of us offline.

Yes, you can purchase hard acrylic cutting squares.  Amazon sells them as do
most craft stores.  Here is the information from Amazon:

 Dritz R641 Omnigrid Ruler Set, Squares

You can then  use a rotary wheel to cut around the templates

First I want to say I'm really not a crafter, but someday I'll take a class.
I do rehab teaching though, and I have a client who is still quilting, but
is having trouble cutting out squares. Is there any type of guide for this,
and is there a guide to help a person sew straight on a sewing machine? If
so, where do you get either of these items? Any help I get would be
appreciated.
