I use a magnetic seam guide on my machine.

It is a square magnet with a bumper edge.  I measure the distance from the
needle to the bumper edge and that is my seam allowance.

These can be found at any fabric shop or at Amazon.

Jan, Pop cycle sticks can be glued to the seam line of the machine.  Some
may stack two or three sticks to make a higher guide.  I use a seam guide
which is screwed on to the machine and can be adjusted to different size
seams, whereas the pop cycle sticks are permanent.  seam guides can be
purchased at any shop which sells sewing items.  I use a very thin block of
wood for a pattern for my square and a rotary cutter with pad to cut the
material accurately.  The pad is necessary if using the rotary cutter.  This
set can be purchased at Wall-Mart or any craft store.

First I want to say I'm really not a crafter, but someday I'll take a class.
I do rehab teaching though, and I have a client who is still quilting, but
is having trouble cutting out squares. Is there any type of guide for this,
and is there a guide to help a person sew straight on a sewing machine? If
so, where do you get either of these items? Any help I get would be
appreciated.
