If it is thin, use it double stranded.  I have to do this with some sparkle yarns.  There are some solid and sparkle cord you can get at Michaels, near the plastic canvas.  II use cord and yarn, to make textured items.

Yes, plastic canvas.  The pieces are cut out to the shape of a cross.  Do you just use any yarn that's strong enough for stitching, or do you use specific material?  For example, I have a ball of rather soft fuzzy yarn that could very well be for knitting or crocheting.  Would that be acceptible?  Normally I use just any yarn as long as it's not too thick or too thin.
