I am glad you asked this question because I want to know the answer too,
smile. I love anything to do with yarn and crafts and am hungry to know
about it and do it.

Tracy;
What is the difference between, crewel, cross stitch and embroidery and
needle point?
I do plastic canvas and make up most of my designs.
I wrote a book for Horizons for the Blind on plastic canvas.

I used to do crewel. I had a braille book explaining the various stitches.

I used thin yarn and regular cloth. Not sure if the cloth was cotton or
linen, but it was about the thickness and texture of a cloth napkin. I
stretched it on an embroidery frame, then used the stitches from my book to
make my own pictures.
The book was from a long time ago, so I don't know if it's still around. It
was called something like Crewel Embroidery, but there was more to the title
than that.

Subject: [Nfb-krafters-korner] craft question

Hi, all, does anybody do any cross stitch, crewl, or embroidery who is
totally blind and never seen or known about colors and such?? I have been
given several kits for different needlepoint crafts and was just wondering.
I have tried to follow plastic canvas directions given by blind people and
haven't grasped the concepts and was just wondering. I do a lot of things
but have never adequately learned about things like degree turns and
diagonal as they relate to certain things. I made up my own stitch pattern
for plastic canvas and was taught one stitch by somebody with sight for
plastic canvas but want to learn more and possibly use some of the kits I
got. I did a little bit of what they said was crewl from a kit mother
bought me when I was in middle school, and it was a hard plastic thing with
holes and a hard plastic frame. There was a kit that a friend said was
crewl that had some kind of cloth or small holed canvas and I want to learn
more about it and possibly come up with a way to do certain projects people
might think I can't do. I run an apartment, take care of dogs, cook, clean,
do laundry, garden, and do several crafts with yarn but am always looking to
learn something new and out of the box but my sighted help has been minimal.
This could change but so far hasn't. Thanks all for any input and have a
blessed day.
