[Nfb-krafters-korner] Gourd Bird Houses

When they dry, some have just a little left inside. You have to scoop out others. Sometimes the seeds are so dry they actually rattle. Those would just shake out if there is a hole. I think I planted four different varieties, but it is hard for me to tell which is which. Now most of them are various shades of brown. I am not going to try to paint or burn designs on them, but might try laquer or dipping in color. I think I will also try making some handles for hanging. I have seen lots of different edges aroundthe top when it is opened like a bowl. I have also seen groups of gourds assembled together in different shapes, but don't think I am going to try that.

How do you make the gourd hollow? Do you scoop out the pulp? I remember seeing those bird houses at Christmas bazaars and shows, and if I remember right, the hole is on the largest part. I think it’s fun to have plants we can use for making things other than for food and beauty.
